How to Care for Amber Jewelry

Amber is a unique and ancient beauty that can keep its special qualities and shine for a lifetime when taken care of properly. You can take steps to ensure your amber jewelry doesn't break or become damaged by chemicals around your house.

Instructions

    1

Store your amber in a soft cloth to protect its outer shell from contact with other objects. Keep individual amber pieces away from contact with other metals or pieces of amber. Restring amber necklaces or bracelets in such a way that a knot between each piece of amber prevents rubbing or touching, which can cause the soft amber to chip, scratch and wear. Never store amber where temperatures will change or where it will receive direct sunlight.

    2

Keep amber away from heat, steam or ultrasound. Never wear your amber jewelry when cooking over the stove for long periods of time as heat causes amber to shatter and crack. Salad dressing and artificial oils can damage the outer shell. Avoid cleaning or doing daily chores while wearing amber; common household detergents and cleaners can permanently ruin the amber, giving it a white coating.

    3

Always add your amber jewelry to your outfit last, after applying hairspray or perfume. Allow any chemicals you spray on your body, including deodorant, to dry completely against your skin. Avoid contact of amber with these types of chemicals; they can cause it to have a white, and sometimes permanent, outer coating.

    4

Remove dust periodically by using lukewarm water (never hot) and a soft cloth to rub the amber gently. Pure, natural, clear oils like olive oil can be rubbed on with a soft cloth to restore luster. Continue polishing until all excess oil is removed and the shine is restored.
