How to Make Stud Earrings Become Dangling

Your old stud earrings may be out of fashion, but those tiny gems can easily become unique statement pieces. Dangling earrings can add elegance to almost any outfit and are easy to make using very basic tools. Instead of buying a new pair, you can salvage those old studs and dress them up for a new look that is completely your own.

Instructions

    1

Wind the wire tightly around the earring post until secured. Push the wire toward the stud. Snip one end of the excess wire and press inward to protect against pricking.

    2

Hold the tip of the remaining wire with chain nose pliers. Curl the wire by twisting the pliers and wrapping the wire one time around the tip of the pliers, creating a loop. Cut the excess wire. Close the loop by placing it in the "jaws" of the pliers, then closing the pliers against the outside of the loop.

    3

Insert wire into the hole in the round gemstone. Grab one end of the wire by with the pliers. Twist the pliers to form a loop and attach it to the closed loop you created in the previous step, then close that loop. Loop the opposite end and close it.

    4

Insert wire into the droplet. Twist the wire above the gemstone with your fingers. Loop both ends of the wire. Join one end with the closed loop from the previous step and then close it.

    5

Hold the unattached loop steady with the chain nose pliers. Double the loop by winding the wire around the pliers with your fingers. Wind the remaining wire loosely beneath the loop repeatedly so the wire forms a spiral. Unwrap some of the spiral if necessary to position the spiral over the droplet. Press the spiral over the droplet for an overlapped decoration.
