How to Find an Ideal Cut Diamond

Diamonds are forever, so it is wise to put in time and thought before purchasing one of these precious stones. There are roughly a dozen common diamond cuts, ranging from the simplicity of an emerald-cut to the staggering brilliance of a princess-cut diamond. The right cut can give brilliance, depth and clarity to a stone, while the wrong cut can expose flaws and make the stone appear dull or lifeless. Exercise care, caution and thought, and you'll be enjoying your diamond for years to come.

Instructions

    1

Consider the future of your diamond when deciding which cut is ideal for you. If you are looking for a diamond for a ring, know that the round brilliant-cut is considered the classic diamond shape. Baguettes are excellent for rings as well, but they are more commonly used as an accent stone. A pear-shaped or marquise-cut diamond will give the illusion of length and slimness to small hands or short fingers.

    2

Weigh the other three Cs of diamond quality -- clarity, color and carats -- when choosing your diamond cut. Ascher- or emerald-cut diamonds, with their broad, flat planes, will expose discolorations and flaws within the stone, so clarity will be important. A radiant- or trilliant-cut diamond is made up of more facets will lessen imperfections (including color) and make the stone appear larger.

    3

Research your potential vendor before making a diamond purchase. There are thousands of online retailers for loose cut diamonds, but only a chosen few are truly reputable. Always communicate with your vendor extensively as to the purpose of your stone, your budget, the cut you are seeking, and any other specifications you have. Never pay in full before the stone is delivered, and be wary of those vendors that insist you do so.
