How to Clean & Bring Out the Color in Diamonds

Cleaning your jewelry regularly not only helps keep it looking good, but it helps maintain it over the long term. Although diamonds are the hardest mineral, they are still subject to dirt, grease and grime. When diamonds become dirty they lose their sparkle, and their color becomes dull and dingy. If your diamond is dirty, you can mix your own diamond cleaner at home and shine up your jewelry to reveal its natural color and brilliance.

Instructions

    1

Mix 1 tbsp. of ammonia and 6 tbsp. of water in a small bowl. Wear rubber gloves when you are handling ammonia and make sure the area you are working in is well ventilated.

    2

Place your diamond jewelry in the bowl with the ammonia and water.

    3

Allow your diamond to soak in the ammonia cleansing solution for 30 minutes.

    4

Scrub your diamond with a soft bristle toothbrush. Use caution not to scratch the metal setting.

    5

Remove your diamond from the cleansing solution. Tap gently to loosen any dirt or debris that may be stuck in the mounting bracket.

    6

Submerge your diamond jewelry back into the cleaning solution. Swirl it around in the solution for one final cleaning.

    7

Rinse your diamond jewelry under a stream of cold water. Make sure the drain is plugged or covered. Gently dry your diamond with a microfiber cloth.
