How to Care for Cultured Pearls

Cultured pearls are made from nacre, a substance that oysters secrete. This component makes pearls soft and porous. Pearls rarely shatter but they do damage easily. Learn to properly care for your cultured pearls by following these steps.

Instructions

    1

Wear your pearls regularly. Your body's natural oils will heighten their luster and shine.

    2

Store pearls properly. Keep them separated from other pieces that could scratch them. A good option is to tuck cultured pearl jewelry into a cloth pouch or lined box.

    3

Clean your pearls with warm water and mild soap, but do not soak them. Let them air dry on a soft towel. If your cultured pearls are strung, do not immerse them in water because the water could seep into the hole. Instead, wipe them with soft chamois.

    4

Protect cultured pearl jewelry from damaging elements like light, heat and chemicals. Put on your pearl jewelry only after blow-drying your hair and applying cosmetics, perfume and hairspray. Do not wear cultured pearls in bright sunlight for long periods.

    5

Keep your pearls out of water. Remove them before swimming, entering a hot tub, showering or washing your hands. Pool chemicals can damage cultured pearls and even tap water may be too harsh.

    6

Have your jeweler restring your pearl necklace or bracelet about once a year. Request nylon or silk thread with a knot between each pearl to prevent friction and retain the pearls if the thread breaks.
