Jewelry making has always been an art form among the many different tribes native to the continent. Each piece represents some part of the religious, cultural, spiritual or artistic beliefs of the people. Modern day jewelry, made across the globe, can trace its roots to ancient Africa.
Early History
Archaeologists have found beads on the African continent dating back tens of thousands of years. Simple materials like eggs had been used to craft these beads. These are believed to have been the earliest forms of jewelry in the world.
Common Materials
For centuries, African jewelry has been made using natural metals including copper, bronze and gold. Artisans native to the continent also used precious and semi-precious stones like turquoise, sapphires and rubies. Pieces that had been embellished with precious stones or ivory were often owned by royalty.
Styles
African jewelry has always included a wide variety of styles including bracelets, necklaces, earrings and crowns. Ancient styles exhibited themes that related to cultural, spiritual and religious beliefs. A common theme seen in ancient African jewelry as well as in modern day jewelry is the woman and child theme.
