How to Make a Necklace Out of a Belt Buckle

Jewelry is as much a part of your wardrobe as your shoes or sweaters. Finding the perfect necklace to coordinate with your outfit can complete your look. If the piece is one-of-a-kind, it's even better. Creating your own necklace out of a belt buckle will give you the perfect complement to your favorite outfit and a piece of jewelry you won't find anywhere else.

Instructions

    1

Drape the ribbon around your neck and determine the length needed for your necklace. Add 1 or 2 inches to account for the ribbon shortening during braiding. Cut your ribbon to the desired length. The ribbon should be able to fit over your head comfortably once it's adhered to the buckle.

    2

Loop 1 or 2 inches of one end of the ribbon around one end of the belt buckle. Glue it in place with the hot glue gun. Allow the glue to dry completely.

    3

Measure 4 or 5 inches from the glued ribbon toward the other end. Mark this with the fabric pencil. Cut the ribbon into three strips from the loose end to the fabric pencil mark.

    4

Hold the three strips of ribbon in your hands, separating them. Cross the right strand over the center strand and the left strand over the new center strand. Pull the ribbon strips apart to tighten the braid. Continue this process to braid the rest of the ribbon strips.

    5

Loop 1 or 2 inches of the braided end of the ribbon over the other end of the belt buckle. Glue it to the belt buckle with the hot glue gun. Allow the glue to dry completely.

    6

Glue the fabric flower to the ribbon at the start of the braid. This will give your necklace a more finished look and hide any curling or rippling caused by the braiding. Allow the glue to dry completely before wearing your necklace.
