How to Know if a Ruby Is Real

Never take a salesman's word for it when purchasing an expensive piece of jewelry. You always want to make sure you are purchasing an authentic piece and not something synthetic. Synthetic rubies have flooded the market in recent years. A synthetic ruby has the same mineral properties as a real ruby but is created in a lab. Educate yourself on how to tell the difference between an authentic ruby and a fake.

Instructions

    1

Look closely at the clarity of the ruby. Is it unnaturally clear? If so, it may be a fake. Real rubies often have visible flaws.

    2

Look at the piece under a microscope. If you see bubbles of any kind, you are dealing with a fake.

    3

Observe the color of the gem. Real rubies are a rich, deep red. Synthetics may appear lighter and brighter.

    4

Make note of the gem's setting. If it is set in 18 or 24 karat gold, it is likely real. If it is set in gold-plated metal, it may be a fake.

    5

Look at the back of the ring. If it is a closed back setting, it is probably a fake.

    6

Feel the ruby. Real rubies have a rougher feel than their fake counterparts. Also, synthetic rubies usually feel warmer to the touch.

    7

Take your ruby to an appraiser or professional jeweler to be examined. They will be able to examine your stone and tell you if it is a fake or the real deal. This is the best way to find out if your stone is real.
