Man-made diamond rings are also referred to as synthetic. According to Jennifer Mulrean at MSN.com, synthetic diamonds have reached a point in technology in which it is genuinely hard to tell the difference between a real diamond and a synthetic diamond.
Process
David Heller, president of synthetic diamond maker Gemesis, says it takes about four-and-a-half days to make a three-carat diamond. These diamonds look like those that come from the ground, but they do not take millions of years to create.
Big Savings
If you were to purchase a real 1.36-carat yellow diamond, it would cost $22,000. However, the man-made diamond would cost less than a third of that, at around $6,800.
Cultured Diamonds
The terms cultured diamond and synthetic diamond can be used interchangeably. Companies that sell these diamonds prefer the term cultured to describe their diamonds.
GIA Grading
If you purchase a synthetic diamond, you will not be able to get a Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grading for it. These certifications typically include the four Cs of a diamond: cut, clarity, color and carat weight.
Visuals
According to MSN's Mulrean, a synthetic diamond looks like a real diamond, even to a trained pair of eyes. A trained jeweler has a better chance of sniffing out a synthetic diamond if it's placed under a magnifier called a loupe.
