Zircon is not to be confused with the similar-in-name cubic zirconia, a laboratory-created diamond imitation. In fact, zircon is a natural gemstone found in a number of colors, including blue.
Description
Blue is the most sought-after color of zircon in 2010. Most of the stones are a pastel blue, but more unusual bright-blue zircons can also be found.
Birthstone
Today, blue zircon is considered an alternate birthstone for the month of December. During Victorian times, blue zircon was a popular choice for jewelry.
Where to Find It
Ratanakiri province in Cambodia is the main source for blue zircon. The name "Ratanakiri" literally translates as "gemstone mountain," says the website Thai Gem.
Legends
Zircon is mentioned in an ancient Indian tale of the "kalpa tree," which glowed with zircon jewels and was considered a gift to the gods. The blue zircon was once believed to aid a person's sleep, and to confer prosperity and wisdom, says the International Colored Gem Association.
Special Qualities
The brilliance of the zircon is caused by dispersion, as light enters the gem and separates into a prism of colors. Its sparkle is considered to be close to that of the diamond.
