How to Use a Spring Coil to Make a Necklace

Making your own corded necklace or bracelet is an easy, rewarding project. You can save money by doing it yourself and choose whatever items you'd like to include on your necklace to suit your personal taste. One of the easiest ways to make a necklace is with colorful rattail cord. If you attach a spring coil to either end of the cord, you can then attach jump rings and a clasp for a professional, finished look.

Instructions

    1

Cut a piece of the 3mm rattail cord to the finished length you'd like to make your necklace, using scissors. Allow about 1/2 inch in length in your measurement for the addition of jump rings and a clasp.

    2

Dip the end of the toothpick into the E6000 glue, taking a small amount to insert into one end of the spring coil.

    3

Coat the inside of the spring coil with the glue and save the toothpick.

    4

Insert one end of the rattail into the spring coil at the opposite end from the tiny hook.

    5

Squeeze the last coil on the spring coil with the needle-nose pliers so that it firmly grips the rattail, holding it in place in the spring coil.

    6

Thread any beads, charms or other necklace items on the other end of the rattail in the order you prefer for your necklace.

    7

Insert the opposite end of the rattail into the second spring coil in the same manner as you did the first one.

    8

Squeeze the tiny loop on each spring coil tightly closed with the needle-nose pliers and attach a jump ring to each spring coil.

    9

Add a clasp to your necklace by attaching the two halves to either jump ring at the ends of the necklace. Follow the directions for attaching it depending on the type of clasp you're using.
