How to Make an Earring Hook

Whether doing it as a side business or just simply creating unique accessories for yourself, making jewelry can be a fun and rewarding activity. If you choose to make earrings, ear wires (also known as earring hooks) are obviously a very important part of the process. Rather than spending money to buy them in bulk, you can make your own earring hooks at home.

Instructions

    1

Coil the wire around the marker or pen. To make multiple hooks at once, coil the wire around the marker or pen more than once. If you end up with more than you'll need for this project, save them for later.

    2

Using a wire cutter, cut the end of the wire so that only the loops on the marker remain.

    3

Slip the looped wire off the marker. Cut the looped wire to create individual circles. Make a hoop at one end of each of the wire circles.

    4

Using a pair of pliers, make a curl at the other end of the wire circle. Again using the pliers, squeeze the wire so that the tiny hoop and the ear hole end are closer together.

    5

File the end that is going through the ear hole so that it's smooth and will be comfortable for the wearer. You can use 400-grit sandpaper, a jeweler's file or a bur cup to do this.

    6

Hammer the hook when finished, using a chasing hammer. If you just want to harden the wire, do this lightly. If you want a flattened look, hammer the hook with more force.
