Finding a ring for yourself or a special person in your life may involve a great deal of thought consideration. National department store chains, pawn shops, online retailers and custom jewelers offer a vast selection of costume, promise, wedding bands and engagement rings. Determining the wearer's ring size will enable the jeweler to size the ring appropriately. An ill-fitting ring may increase the likelihood of loosing the piece of jewelry, or possibly constrict the blood flow in and out of the ring finger.

Instructions

    1

Wait until the late evening before measuring the finger. Only measure the finger at room temperature. The time of day and weather conditions may cause your fingers to swell or constrict.

    2

Examine the top portion of your finger and middle knuckle. A significantly larger knuckle will affect your ability to put on and remove the ring; consider measuring the circumference of the knuckle, in addition to the top portion of the finger.

    3

Wrap the piece of string around the top portion of the finger. Pinch the string together to make a perfect circle. Make sure the string hugs the finger without constriction.

    4

Mark where the wrapped portion of the string meets the end portion of the string, using a marker.

    5

Remove the string from the finger. Place the ruler on a flat surface, such as a table. Measure from the top of the string to the mark you previously made; make sure to straighten the string as much as possible before measuring to obtain an accurate reading.

    6

Measure the circumference of the knuckle, using the methods outlined above. Average the knuckle and finger circumference sizes together.

    7

Compare your measurement, or average measurement, with a suitable ring chart to find the appropriate ring size for the finger.
