They type of gemstone contained in your jewelry determines how the item should be cleaned, as this is the most sensitive part of the piece. Gemstones such as diamonds or sapphires, which are crystalline, are much harder and can withstand more than softer stones like turquoise or opal. Some gemstones will withstand soaking or boiling, while some require only a moist cloth. Ultrasonic cleaners are generally more risky than they are worth, as they can shatter a gemstone with any imperfections.

Instructions

Crystalline or Transparent Gemstones

    1

Spread one cloth over the work surface to cushion and catch the jewelry in case it drops.

    2

Soak the jewelry in the bowl of warm water with a drop or two of mild soap.

    3

Work out any organic matter that is still evident underneath the gemstone that was not removed by soaking, using the soft brush.

    4

Empty the soapy water and fill the bowl with clean water to rinse the jewelry. If the stone is of a type that can withstand it, such as diamonds, rubies or sapphires, a little ammonia added to the rinse water will add "sparkle," according to SpecialGifts.com. If the gem is set in silver, do not use ammonia.

    5

Dry the piece with a soft cloth using a patting motion to avoid catching the prongs of the setting on a thread.

Soft or Organic Gemstones

    6

Place one cloth over the work surface.

    7

Moisten a section of the other cloth with water. Do not use soap or ammonia on soft gemstones because they may absorb chemicals, which can cause discoloration over time or damage the surface.

    8

Wipe the gemstone gently with the moistened soft cloth, then dry with a dry section of the cloth.
