Differences Between Cut-Lead Crystals & Quartz Crystals

The term "crystal" can refer to several objects. Merriam-Webster defines crystal as quartz; as a body formed by a regular, repeated arrangement of atoms; and as superior-quality glass. Thus, while similar in name, the difference between quartz crystals and cut-lead crystal is quite substantial.

Cut-lead Crystal

Cut-lead crystal is lead crystal that's been cut to make it appear clean and bright. Unlike glass, which is composed of sodium and potassium, lead crystal contains sodium, silicone and lead. The lead content of crystal heightens the refraction index and makes crystal appear brighter and cleaner than standard glass when it's cut.

Quartz Crystal

Quartz crystals are pieces of quartz that have been carved; they're made up of silicon and oxygen. Pure quartz is colorless, but gem varieties of quartz include the purple amethyst, orange citrine and pink rose quartz.

Crystal Uses

Lead crystal is often used in decorative pieces such as vases and chandeliers, as well as in wine glasses and bowls. Gem varieties of quartz are used in jewelry, while pure quartz is often used in optical devices and in radio frequency oscillators. Both lead crystal and quartz crystal are thought by some to have healing properties.
