How to Dress Up an Old Black Dress With a Scarf

Breathe life into an old black dress by pairing it with a colorful scarf. Scarves are versatile accessories that can be worn many ways for different occasions and events, whether formal, informal or somewhere in between. Use a scarf with the right texture, patterns, designs and fabric for the occasion, and wear the scarf in a manner that suits the event you are participating in. Use the scarf as a piece of jewelry, as a formal wrap, or layered skirt, among other options.

Instructions

    1

Wear the scarf sarong-style around your waist to add a decorative layer to your dress. Tie the scarf in a knot on one side of your hips, then pull it down to drape it over the dress.

    2

Wrap the scarf around your shoulders to add color to the top of your dress. Drape it over your shoulders from the front and let the scarf ends hang down over your back, or wrap it around your shoulders two or three times and tie it in the back.

    3

Create a belt out of your scarf by rolling or folding it and then tying it tightly around your waist.

    4

Make a long necklace out of the scarf by draping it around your neck with both ends hanging down in front of you. Make a loose knot and allow the ends of the scarf to hang down. Leave a considerable distance between the knot and your neckline.

    5

Wear the scarf over your black dress like a stole or wrap around your back and shoulders. Let the ends drape down in front or tie them together loosely.
