Cultured Diamonds Vs. Mined Diamonds

A mined diamond is a diamond mined from the ground. A cultured diamond is man-made by growing the crystal from a seed under very high temperatures and pressure. The two types look very similar, but do have their differences including varying size and color and price.

Definitions

Mined diamonds are produced underground naturally. Synthetic diamonds are fake diamonds produced by man. Cultured diamonds are real diamonds that are man-made (formed above ground).

Mined Diamonds

Most mined diamonds on the market today come from South Africa, and are formed deep within the earthapproximately 100 miles down. Mined diamonds vary in size, and can be very largesometimes exceeding 500 carats.

Cultured Diamonds

Cultured diamonds are grown in labs and can take approximately 100 hours to grow. They can be as large as 2 carats. Cultured diamonds have the same physical attributes as mined diamonds, including composition, weight, brilliance and hardness.

Similarities

Cultured and mined diamonds are physically the same in their hardness, composition, brilliance, clarity and chemical composition.

Differences

The only difference between a mined and cultured diamond is how big it may be and where it was manufactured. Mined diamonds also may have irregularities and chemical impurities.

Costs

Because the cultured diamond takes far less time to produce, the costs are much lower. A cultured diamond can cost approximately 75 to 85 percent less than a mined diamond.
